Conversations With A Thirteen Year Old Girl

"Mandy died in her sleep last night"
"Who's Mandy?" I asked.
"She's a girl that goes to my school."
"Were you friends with her?"
"No, but I knew of her."
"Do you know why she died?" I asked
"They said she had anorexia"
"Do you know what anorexia is?
"Yes, it's that thing that Karen Carpenter had"

"That girl is so EMO..." she said as she pointed to a girl going into the school.
"What is EMO?"
"It means emotionally challenged"
"Ok?" I say sarcastically...
"EMOs are girls that dress up goth and cut themselves" she informed me..

"Most of my friends are allowed to date."
"Really? How do they go on their dates?" I inquire
"Their older brother drives.."
"All your friends have older brothers?
"Most of them do"

"I don't know why I can't go to_____'s house for a sleep over!" she cries.
"What happened at her last sleep over?" I ask.
"They went to 7-11." she says
"What time did they go?"
"Midnight.." she mumbles
"Enough said" I finish...

"Can you take me to Target?' she asks
"What do you need to get?
"I have gift cards"
"Okay, what do you want to buy?"
"I have gift cards and I want to buy something"
"Didn't you want to save for a I touch?"
"Not anymore..."
"Why, I thought you "had" to have one"
"I don't have enough money to buy one."
"Why don't you save your money and get one then"
"I want to buy a bag, earrings, a necklace, and a CD..."

Interesting chats with my thirteen year old daughter....

  5. It takes a lot to be a teenager in today's world. Our kids go through such different things than we did. However there is still one thing that is still strong and true and that is the power of a praying Mom. Hang in there! This to shall pass. Thankful for "seasons"...

  6. I do not have teenagers yet...hope I can learn a little from my bloggy and real friends before I get there. On the other hand, I watched The Doctors the other day and I may never let my children out of my sight.

  8. So funny...I just had a conversation with my 10 YEAR OLD last night...she wants to 'dress' EMO. I asked her what she wanted to wear. She said 'all black clothes'. She doesn't really 'get' what EMO is..she just wanted to wear all black today, and she heard my 16yo daughter talking about EMO girls at school. So I let her..just today. But I told her that I am not letting her wear all black everyday. I'm sure its just a phase. They all go through it. Last summer, it was all about the 'tie dye"! For the longest time, my oldest would not dress 'girly'. She was 'sporty' as she called it. Now, at 16, she LOVES wearing girly clothes. Guess I'll have to wait and see what next month brings :) LOL!!

    Have a great day!

My college age daughter still comes up with "Other girls Moms and Dads buy them......" or "Other girls Moms and Dads let them......" lol.....We always remind her that she is not other girls!

  10. Yes, amazing conversations. They never get boring do they? So sad about the girl with anorexia...now that and the EMO girls are conversations worth having.
    Take care, Suz

  11. Having just come out of the teenage years with two girls, 15 months apart, I can honestly say that it's extremely tough going for the next five to six years. Then it gets better, everyone sees the light at the end of the tunnel, and as always, God is good and get all of you through it. :)

Hang in there. Sounds like you're doing a great job.
