Is California Having An Earthquake Next Week?

Years ago I visited New York City - I took a bus to Battery Park. On the ride - I met a very nice New York woman.. She asked where I was from and after I told her California - She asked me how could I live there with ALL the earthquakes.. I thought the question was cute.... I often wonder how people live in the Midwest with their tornadoes... or the South with hurricanes.. or the East with their Ice and Blizzard storms... I'm thinking California is pretty mild compared to that...

I have lived in California my entire 45 years.... There have been a few earthquakes.. I don't fear them... When I am woken up in the middle of the night by one - it will startle me.. but that's about it - I usually stay in bed and ride in out... Last Easter (2010) I was driving home from my niece's house... I was stopped at a red light and my car started shaking... at first I thought there was something wrong with my car - until I saw the red light swaying... that was pretty fun... We have never had any "real" damage from a quake.... About 15 years ago - our cabin in Big Bear (mountains) was hit by a pretty good sized quake.. The refrigerator door opened and some food popped out... A plate came off a wall and landed on the couch... A rock from the fireplace fell down... Now when we leave the cabin - we use shoe strings and tie the cabinets closed...

In the news recently - I have been hearing experts' concerns about the possibility of a big earthquake on the west coast of the United States.. You have to understand - I have heard about the "Big One" hitting California my entire life... Jokes being said about buying beachfront property in Nevada is not a new one... So I usually just roll my eyes... when I hear rumors or "expert" predictions of earthquakes.. But this video - below does make me wonder.....

The West Coast is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire - About 90% of the world's earthquakes and 80% of the world's largest earthquakes occur along the Ring of Fire.... There have been earthquakes in the Ring of Fire - And the West coast is looking to be next.. Jim Berkland - a well known geologist - accurately predicted the 1989 San Francisco quake days before it happened - based on occurrences in the sea life... Watch the interview below and tell me what do you think?

  1. He seems to know what he's talking about. I would be concerned.

  3. Kelly, he seems to make many valid points. I agree with Mari that I would be concerned too. I'll pray for all of you. I hope that his theory does not come true.

  4. I'm a Cali girl too : ) Rode the waves during the 89 quake and I gotta say, that interview was interesting BUT I don't put too much into it because I've been hearing speculation my whole life. I just moved out of the bay area up north and the earthquakes are limited to never so maybe one day I'll miss them...lol

  5. Thanks for stopping by today!!! I've totally become my mother too!!
I am from Dallas where they say one of the worst tornadoes is suppose to hit and nothing has happened yet. I have never been in an earthquake, but they do scare me. If it were me living in California, I would just go on with my life as I always do and try not to worry about it(easier said than done!). When we start to worry about things too much it can be overwhelming. I hope nothing happens in California or Tx for that matter any time soon or ever!!!!!!!

    Hope

  6. I also grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and have been in many quakes. I feel the same as you about them.
This was a super interesting video. Looking at that ring of fire it kind of makes sense. I guess time will tell.
I thought it was also interesting that the story I woke up to on the news this morning was that a huge piece of Highway 1 about 12 miles from Carmel fell into the ocean. Hhhhmmmm - Not earthquake related but still...

  7. I would be aware and prepared but not let it control my life. Make sure to have plenty of can food, bottle water and fuel and you should be ok.

  9. The video is interesting, but I have to go with you never know. I guess there are lots of things to be afraid of, but we have already lost if we let the fear rule our lives. Prepare for the worst, but hope for the best.

  10. Coming from someone who has lived (most) of her life with tornadoes and hurricanes....I couldn't live in an area prone to earthquakes. At least with tornadoes and hurricanes you get some kind of warning....an earthquake? Not so much.

  11. I think you could go crazy if you listened to all the predictions.

I hope the big one doesn't happen. My heart can't handle much more grief.

  13. Well tonight is the full moon so I guess the countdown would be on. What he says makes perfect sense, I just hope nothing happens. That's some pretty heavy stuff. If it were me, it'd be in the back of my mind and I'd probably be googling every day to see if any whales were washing up. Not that it would do any good...I'm quite the worry wart though.
I'm following you back from The Copper Brick Road by the way.
