Private Or Public - That Is The Question

I am in the middle of the one of the hardest decision I have had to make.... There are so many factors that affect my decision.. and I am completely torn... Do I keep my kids in the private Christian school they are in and allow them to go through to their senior year or do I pull them out and have them start high school and middle school in the public school system this fall?

Pros For Staying in Private

Excellent education
Uniforms
All their friends are there
High Christian and Moral values
Convenient

Cons For Staying Private
Expensive

Pros For Going Public
Great Tennis team (both girls play)
Prom and dances
Good education
Free

Cons For Going Public
No friends
The "real" world
Christian values are not a priority
20 miles round trip a day - to/ from and to/from...

Another thing that I have to do - for whatever reason our neighborhood tract goes to a different city school district - and it is awful..... So in order for my kids to go to the school they should be going to - they have to take Japanese - yep, you read that right!!!! I'm trying to figure out if that is a pro or con for public....

What would you do?

Public

Private

  1. That is a hard decision. Mine are all grown and I do realize that things are different now, but after a disastrous experience with a private Christian school we chose the public school, system. I felt I had to, at some point, rely on the background of my children and what they would do with it. They faltered at times, but I am sure they would have faltered anyway at times..... part of life. Now they have children in school and they choose to go with the public schools and are very involved.

  2. Kelly,

I let my kids make the choice. We've raised them to be such great kids and have a spiritual background in things pertaining to their upbringing and such but in the long run, for my oldest I really wanted her to experience all things offered to seniors, it's that final step to becoming her own person while I can coach her through some difficult decisions if she needs help.

Here is hoping that you can make your decision and it turns out well for you.

  3. You had me at "prom and dances!"

A few pink-haired friends, with the Christian school foundation you've already given, aren't going to matter, in my opinion!

  4. The choice is yours to make, but keep in mind: You have raised them in a loving, caring, christian home. Sending them to public won't be undoing what you've done so far. And maybe it is better to let them have a 'taste' of the real world now while you can control it then later when they are no longer at home...

  5. I'm not in your shoes, and I only know the little bit you've described here. But I would discuss it with my spouse, my children and God. And then, I would follow my heart, because it's lead by Him.

  7. There is another alternative and because you asked what I would do (hahaha) I'd homeschool. I have a ton of pros and cons. Would you like my list?

  8. As much I love my kids - I know me and there is no way that I could home school.. I'm not smart enough nor do I have the time to devote to home schooling.. But I love the fact Oh Sew, that you are so keeping it real for me.

Dusty and I are praying and talking about it..

It's a hard decision to make..

  9. Oh my gosh, I can't possibly make that call for you. What might be right for me could be entirely wrong for you! Good luck!

  10. Today - I filled out the out of district transfer papers for both of the kids for public school - I won't find out until June if they have been accepted but my guess would be yes... Now I just have to think, discuss, and pray for direction...

Thank you to all of my friends for your comments. Love to you.

  11. It is a tough decision. My kids go to public school. I went to private school. Often I wish that I could send them to private school for the religious education and environment. However, I can't imagine taking them away from their friends. I think your girls will do fine in public school. They are bright, outgoing girls. Japanese? Not that is going to be fun for all of you :) Sending love back to you, Kelly.

  12. Don't know what to tell you but I will say this....I begged my mom to let me go to public school when we moved from CA to NC and she did for several reasons...the money and she would have to drive me 30 miles one way twice a day. Well, I wish she had sent me to private school...it was Very hard going from private school (I had just turned 13) to public school!! Good luck with what you decide to do.
