I Wrote The Book On 'Boy Crazy'

When I was a kid growing up my mom would often tell me that I was going to learn from her mistakes.... I had rules growing up -rules to protect me - rules to help me become responsible - rules to help me live in the real world... Of course, I thought my mom was over protective... completely irrational and extremely old fashion... So when puberty hit and I knew more than my mom ( every teen is smarter than their parents) - I looked for ways to work around her rules....

Now I have two girls... both are teens... both are "smarter" than me.. both think I am over protective... completely irrational and extremely old fashion.... Looking back on the things I did in my youth - I am lucky (seriously) that I wasn't hurt... or worse... It's funny how my daughters believe I have no idea what it is like to have my hormones take over my mind and body... They believe I have no idea what it feels like to be crazy about a boy or two or three.. When I was a teen - I could have written the book on "Boy Crazy" They don't believe that I "get" peer pressure... Oh my girls, I remember the pain and the joys of being a young teen... I remember wanting to grow up faster... I remember wanting my first kiss... my first boyfriend.. my first.....

Because of the things I did growing up - I am a stricter parent... (I did things that my parents never found about it.) I became the master of sneaking out of the house... Remember "party lines" that was the 1978 - 1981 version of the Internet to meet the opposite sex.. I got caught once and my phone was taken away for a couple of weeks.. The next time I wasn't caught and met a much older teen - I was 15 and he was 18... I climbed out my window and went to a Queen concert over 20 miles away.... other nights I was at "much older" crowd parties - hanging out at the beach .. I thought I was cool - I thought I was safe.... Now that I am a forty-four (44) year old mother of two daughters - the idea of my kids doing those things scares the crap out of me.... I was lucky.... In today's world - that kind of behavior may not be so lucky..... My youth may have made me become even more sensitive to what's out there thus being more protective... maybe..

So the other day - my oldest got caught doing something that she knows she shouldn't do.. She's been caught a few too many times lately - so she is being punished... She has lost all her privileges - Everything - her phone, TV, IPOD, computer, and has to go to bed early.... She can earn back her privileges but it will be only one privilege at at time.. All we ask is that she have a good attitude and use good judgment... Ten consecutive days of good behavior she can earn 1 privilege back.. I don't know if we are doing it right - I have to pray that I am making the right decisions.. that she will learn the consequences for good and bad behavior.. The world can be a scary place....

So my kids will continue to think that I am over protective, completely irrational, and extremely old fashion and that's okay..... I love them so very much and my goal is to give them the opportunity to have a life that is far better than mine... Just like my mom's dream was for me... So I really Have Become My Mother...

My Mom's Wish...

Today I went to lunch with my mom - We were talking about my girls - and I made the comment that teenage girls are tough.. the attitude.. the mood swings... the drama....

And my mom - bless her.... said "I know - remember - my curse wish for you? That you have a daughter just like you! Well there you go - You got two"

Dads Vs Moms

Today I learned a very big difference between how dads think and how moms think....

Dads
  1. If the blood isn't gushing than you're fine.
  2. Hey go ahead and drop off the kids at the water park 500 MILES from home - they'll be fine
  3. Thinks mom is over protective
  4. Says 13 and 11 year old girls should be able to hang out at water parks without their parents
  5. Thinks the girls can do the laundry themselves.. - it's mostly theirs anyways.
Moms
  1. If the blood is gushing - Urgent Care here we come
  2. No way are you dropping my kids off at a water park 500 MILES from home -that is why our youngest is crying on the phone - she's afraid to go...
  3. Thinks dad is not protective enough.
  4. Says 13 and 11 year old girls should not be hanging out at water parks without an adult present (one they know)
  5. Thinks the girls can do the laundry themselves.... - it's mostly theirs anyways..
There is a big difference between the parenting skills of dads and moms.... I'm thinking.. I am not saying one way is better than the other.. we're are just different... There is one thing that I can say.... my kids will not be going to the water park by themselves..... at least tomorrow or anytime soon.

Okay.. Enough Already!!!

Today was my day of frustration! You see, my mom got a hairline fracture on her pelvis around the beginning of March. She has no idea how she got it except that she started a workout routine at Curves... After several weeks, the pain got too intense to continue to ignore it so my sister Debbie took her to Urgent Care on March 17th. There they did an x-ray and an ultrasound and found the fracture... So then she made an appointment to see a orthopedic doctor.. I took her to that one... On the first appointment - he looked at the x-rays and he did not see the fracture so he had my mom get a MRI and see him again in 2 weeks... Okay two weeks go by, my mom still in extreme pain and cannot work.. She is bored out of her mind staying at home..my dad passed away last summer so there really isn't anyone to talk to during the day except for the dog, Pati Jo and she just licks her responses..
I take mom to her next orthopedic appointment and he finally sees the fracture that the Urgent Care doctor saw a month ago... grrrrrrr... So what does the doctor say? Well, you have fractured pelvis and looks like you have a torn muscle... continue to relax and you will start getting better...Well she's not and today she was in extreme pain..so much so I took her to the Emergency room..After another round of x-rays and waiting around 3 hours...the doctor finally sees her.. and you ask what happened??? "Oh, you have a fractured pelvis which looks like it's healing.." says the doctor.. "Well, I am in more pain that I was before, why do you think?" my mom asks.... You know what this doctor said????? "Well, it could be your age.." You have got to be kidding... oh and to top things off....he asked my mom how she thought she might have gotten injured.. she said she was working out at Curves.. and he told my mom don't stop doing that!!!!!! SHE HAS A FRACTURED PELVIS...YOU MORON!!!!! So, my poor mom was sent home with a copy of a new x-ray to show her orthopedic doctor...
I don't know what I was expecting.. a miracle?...maybe... Some definite answers? Absolutely... I know my mom.. she is not a whiner.. or a complainer.. or a wimp.. If she says she is hurting, you better bet your bottom dollar she is really hurting... So her frustration and my frustration continue.... we see the ortho doc Tuesday...Think he'll send her for another MRI?
